Software architecture is a team effort. The knowledge needed to design successful systems is often distributed across developers, domain experts, operations teams, stakeholders, and decision makers. In our new video interview, Tom Asel, Eberhard Wolff, and Daniel Sack, curators of the new CPSA-Advanced Level module COSMO – Collaborative Software Modelling, explain how collaborative modelling can bring these perspectives together, bridge communication gaps, and create a shared understanding of both the domain and the architecture.
COSMO puts a strong emphasis on practical experience. During the three-day training, participants explore approaches such as Event Storming and Domain Storytelling, experience collaborative modelling firsthand, and learn how to facilitate effective sessions themselves. The goal is not simply to discuss collaboration, but to equip participants with techniques they can take back to their teams and organizations to generate meaningful outcomes and make better architectural decisions together.
These skills remain highly relevant in the age of AI and LLMs. Making knowledge and mental models explicit not only improves collaboration between people, but can also provide better context for AI tools. Ultimately, COSMO addresses a fundamental challenge that remains regardless of technological change: how people work together to build better software.
